Reactivate Darkel

Grand Theft Auto III Hint: Reactivate Darkel
Note this changes a critical game file. Back up the original before you mistakenly alter your FAT.

You can put the Darkel NPC model back into the game with Notepad. Right click the game folder, click Properties, and un-check the green dot from the Read Only box. Locate the default.ide and pedgrp.dat in the data directory and replace all instances of "scum_man" with "darkel".

People have been modding their game to put Darkel in or even BE Darkel for years now. You must be new around these parts, so I'll give you a little pointer: Don't say his name. Get ready for the rush of "who's Darkel?" that inevitably comes and the argument as to WHY he was removed that invariably follows.

I honestly don't see what's the point in reactivating Darkel, considering that R* removed the missions that he would give to the player - now some of them are rampages - and you wouldn't have any way to interact with him...

Nobody said there had to be a point. After playing the game many times for years now, sometimes it's a fun change of pace to play as Novy for example.

That's not reactivating Darkel. It's just replacing a ped model with the Darkel model.

Is Novy the guy that was said to have been the original main character for gta3? That guy with the blonde spiked hair? What is the ID name?

Personally, im glad they used Claude instead. Novy just looks stupid. Claude seems to suit the games urban enviorment more. Novy just doesnt seem to fit in with the game, that, and he looks kinda fat tounge.gif .

There is really no point in trying reactivate Darkel since all his missions are gone. I do like the Darkel as the player, though.

Also, please don't bump up old topics.

What's the deal with this? When i try to use darkel or novy as ped's in the game, their textures don't show up. I replaced GANG06 (The blue Diablo) with Novy and even put duplicate textures in the txd, one called Novy and one called Chico2 (What the original texture was called) and replaced scum_man with darkel so why isn't the game loading them properly? confused.gif

Edit:

I fixed darkel. Didn't read the first post properly, i've edited the text files and he's working fine now. But if i replace a ped with "Novy" it'll surely load his bad model, the one with LOD blocks around him right? Urgh, this is confusing.

You make all replacements in /models/gta3.img and delete txd.img and txd.dir every time you make such a change. That will prevent the untextured models you see there.
