Here's an interesting article on 1up regarding a questionnaire created by Sony that focuses mainly on online points of interest. The questions look very close to characteristics of XBL, no?

QUOTE
1. On a typical day, how often do you play games online?
2. Do you own a PSP?
3. What is your preferred Online gaming format?
4. What Online Gaming Formats do you own?
5. Do you think you will purchase a PS3?
6. A single identity and password for all online games?
7. Global Lobbies allowing you to play against anyone in the world?
8. Game Lobbies should be language based. (English, French, German etc)
9. Game Lobbies should be based geographically.
10. A standard, interactive lobby structure for all games.
11. Headset support in all online games?
12. A QWERTY keyboard as standard for messaging.
13. USB Keyboard support for every online title.
14. Friend List allowing you to see online/offline status?
15. Friend List allowing you to see what game your friends are playing?
16. Private Messaging across games?
17. A feedback rating allowing you to choose who you play against?
18. Ability to remove players out via a majority vote?
19. Game Host has the ability to remove players?
20. Automatically filter opponents based on connection quality?
21. The ability to download music, game demos and other content?
22. Ability to access the dedicated game forum whilst in game?
23. Ability to take screenshots during the game and share them with friends?
24. Ability to take movie clips in game and share them with friends?
25. Ability to play my music during a game?
26. An in game grief reporting system?
27. Ability to access and manage your gaming profile via PC, PSP as well as PS3?
28. Community features without the need for a game disc.
29. Ability to choose an Avatar for all online titles.
30. The inclusion of a web browser.
31. A specific lobby only for Adults.
32. Service should feature a Global Ranking system for each game.
33. Game Lobbies should be Eyetoy compatible.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sony does end up offering a service that somewhat resembles that Of Microsoft's. It's not like they can deny the success of XBL completely.

Great idea on Sony's half to take inspiration from Microsoft's style of playing in the gaming industry. Imagine playing an online Gran Turismo in your work lunchbreak or playing GTA Online on the bus! biggrin.gif Eyetoy compatible to me means a profile option and/or sticking your mush into the game like the Tony Hawk's series had you do. Very exciting stuff if it goes through, but could delay the PS3 launch further... whatsthat.gif - Holmes

That's why.
It really depends on the pesron (excluding fanboys of course). E.g. the PS3 isn't that much better than the 360 (system spec wise), plus it'll be more expensive. Also, everything depends on what games each console is going to feature.

XBL is a unified service provided by Microsoft that let's you use the same profile, or "gamertag" with any online capable game. Any online games on the PS2 are left to the developers to provide everything.

Personally, I think Microsoft has the right idea becasue it helps make online play more feasible for developers. If Sony were to leave all online capabilities up to the developers again with the PS3, then chances are some of them wouldn't bother with going online.

Although, I hope Sony takes a bit more of a privatized approach. I like the idea of things being unified for technical simplicity, but I really don't want the same screen name and it's statistics associated with every single game I play online. It'd be nice if you could sign up a "master" screen name, then have as many sub-screen names under the master name that you want, or at least one per game. Then you should be given the option not to associate your sub names with your master name so you have the choice to remain somwhat anonymous.

I think the thing is Sony know that they are at a great dis advantage if they don't offer a "good" sustainable online service unlike the rather shakey PS2 one. They know that if they wern't online compatable on release day out of the box they would be at a disadvatnage, and they are already considering their release date is heavily jolted away from that of the 360's.

Another thing is Sony stated quite a while back that their console would be immediately online compatable, whether this mean't online gaming i'm not sure, and for the prics of thing (probably more than hte 360's) Sony would have to include online play as part of the package a bit like the slimline PS2 other wise they will fighting a very long uphill struggle, unless of course a title known as GTA makes an appearance.

Well you can't say it "won't look better than the Xbox 360 because the specs are close", because we haven't played it yet.

Also, I think with XBL and all, Sony's success with the ps2 is bigger than MS with the Xbox (360).

Hope it works for central america, unlike xbl, and hope it is free, unlike xbl.

And stop taking the "lol fanboy" card out.

No it wasn't going to have a unfied system like Xbox Live, just a similar thing to PS2 being online now meaning its up to the developers to setup the online system for their games.
