set your graphics drivers to force mipmapping at trilinear or bilinear
Posted 02 September 2007 - 09:23 AM
* Operating system: Windows XP pro with SP2
* Videocard: GeForce FX 5200, 128 mb
* Processor: Pentium 4 2,8 GHz
* RAM: 1,5 Gig (3 sticks of 512 mb each)
My problem is: When I'm driving around in Los Santos, everything is fine. I've done a few missions, sprayed all the tags, had some fun, etcetera. But, whenever I try to leave Los Santos, by going into Red Country, the game freezes up on me. Sound still works, I keep hearing mp3's play.
I've upgraded my drivers, both for the graphics card and the soundcard (too bad the latest I can find is from 2003 >< (Creative EMU 10K1)).
And also upgraded SA to v1.1 already.
Settings are already on lowest, low details, 1024x768x16 resolution, no anti aliasing, it plays great, but not when I leave Los Santos. I've also disabled the limited frames option, but it still freezes.
So, if anyone knows a solution I'd be very happy
Edit: Tried to revert to 1.0, didnt work either. Anyway, I've shut off my pc about 10 times now, which isnt good for it, so I'll just go back to good ol' PS2 version. At least that works.

I had terrible low fps (about 10-15) with all settings on low and with resolution on 1024x768 and San Andreas patched to 1.1 - I have no choice because I bought 1.1 version. Since I didn't knew how to downgrade to 1.0 I just downloaded a no-dvd crack which was meant for San Andreas 1.0 and my fps is about 50 now with same settings now!
My computers specs:
Intel P 3.0Ghz
XFX GF 7600gt

Operating System: XP SP2
Graphics: SiS 760 128mb
Processor: AMD Sempron 1.8ghz
Whenever I try to get past the Francis International Airport intro, I get a error message. It even happens when I load a saved game.

Technical FAQ: (If replying to this, only quote relevant portion, not all of it please)
If there are any other working solutions and they aren't in my FAQ, please reply and let me know about them so I can add them or link them. I want this to be complete as possible. Thanks!
R* JUST released a patch 1.01 for GTA SA. Unfortunately it took that whole hot coffee fiasco to do it and they are of course disabling that in the patch. See the 2nd post for details of the patch.
official Link to d/l etc: http://www.nomorehotcoffee.com/
Info on what the patch does/fixes and an official FAQ follow below in the 2nd post. I will be updating this FAQ to indicate which problems are possibly fixed in patch.
Make sure to mention what version of the game you have if you post here about a problem or if you PM me.
Update drivers, both sound and graphics. Make sure you are running DX 9. Not 10 mins ago I got a msg from a guy who bluescreened, updated sound drivers and it was fixed.
Nvidia latest driver is 71.89 (note that the 77.30 drivers in Battlefield 2 blue screen when alt tabbing for me).
Ati JUST released a new driver Catalyst 5.6
If you dont know what version you have, its outdated and needs to be updated.
Audigy 2 zs XP drivers: http://tinyurl.com/ad674
bi0h4z4rd let me know that you can update the drivers for creative cards by picking autoupdate and letting it update all the things it asks about here:
Dell laptop 5150/5160 custom inf drivers (helps fix invisible people if you have this issue and this laptop, for other computers try the other possible fixes below in that section):
For some other inf files for drivers on laptops try this:
Minimum Graphics Card info and tips: <inimum of Geforce 3 generation cards reccomended but not nessasarily required (GF4mx info follows).
R* Official answer (see 2nd post) is that you need a graphics card with at least 64 megs of memory, but its possible to run it with even less. Running it with less increases chance of "black roads issue). See 2nd post parts i1, g2, h2.
Someone mentioned a radeon 9100 with issues in 32 bit color. If I'm not mistaken thats a DX 8 generation card so thats probably why it doesn't work properly.
I have heard from someone with a GF4mx (this was a bad card to buy, all reviews stated it, and it was more expensive than gf3 or gf 4200 in many case, both of which were better). Anyway, he had a gf4mx 440 and got it running in the game using omega 1.6177 drivers. Another guy got it running with nvidia drivers with gf4mx. So apparently gf4mx works.
Official answer from take 2 (publisher of the game) in their official support section for GTA SA PC about the geforce 4 mx440:
I also heard from someone with a geforce 2. He said he can run the game as well. Again, note that you will probably have graphical issues with how the game works, might have to use 16 bit to get it to look better or work at all, but at least it CAN work.
Again, older cards try 16 bit color and try leaving framerate limiter on. I have had someone say this gets some cards to work great.
Performance tips (graphical and lagging and chugging hdd with popups): For performance, try turning down/off AA. Try toggling Frame Rate Limiter, it limits framerate to 25 fps. In some situations its better to have off, in some better to have on. Change it from whatever it is.
bi0h4z4rd says "Suggest people play in 16bit, 32bit lags ALOT and includes things like overhead wire shadows, dynamic shadows, etc. doing so can get 50-80fps" He says that he doesn't notice any color loss in 16 bit mode. He also suggests editing the stream.ini to reduce number of cars on screen at one time (bottom of the faq has some info on editing that file). He also says to try playing with the vsync setting UseVSync in the stream.ini
One guy found out how to fix his hdd chugging and lagging the game. He ran a benchmark of his C: hard drive where his games are and found out it was 10 times slower than his other hard drive. He moved it and found the game worked much better (later he found out he was using PIO mode, PIO mode is bad period for hdds or cd/dvd drives). Keep in mind that since there's no "loading" screen it has to load everything dynamically as you play.
PIO mode selection is in control panel, system, hardware tab, device manager, and then IDE controllers.
Camera Controls and the "I want it like VC tips", and spinning camera issue:
Many people are asking about camera controls.
There are essentially two hugely differant modes in GTA SA. One is joystick mode and one is mouse mode. You can use joystick mode even without a joystick plugged in if you want the things it offers. Both modes have auto follow camera in car, if you are mousing just leave mouse alone for sec and it will follow.
The gripes I've seen sometimes come from walking mode. In mouse mode, camera does NOT auto adjust or follow behind. In joystick it does. As well in joystick mode it enabled the classic PS2 autoaim/targeting! And you can still use mouse buttons to fire etc.
Basically it seems rockstar assumed you'd want to manually control the camera while walking in mouse mode and manually control aiming/firing. They should have had a toggle for this as well in addition to mouse/joystick switch if you ask me. Something where if you didn't move mouse camera would auto adjust and follow.
Another couple things to try, set mouse to control car instead of look while driving. As well, try changing vehicle cam to Chase cam (V key I think by default).
As for the spinning camera issue where when you get in a car your camera spins all around uncontrolably, check to see if you have a gamepad or joystick plugged in. Unplug it. If that fixes it, that was the problem. In the 2nd post there's R* information on this on part t2. Also on optical mice, underneath where the optical unit is glowing, blow on it, sometimes a piece of dust or hair catches in that area and blocks it.
"No Disc Inserted. Please insert the CD/DVD" Try the solution that ShooBaDoop mentions in this post about temporarily turning off the DLA thingy (the crappy built in XP burning crap). http://www.gtaforums...dpost&p=2892580
Some info that may be released on this is in 2nd post on part m2.
R* now has some official info on sound issues and fixes. See 2nd post parts n1, q1, c2, i2, l2. Some of these things were already suggested on these boards and FAQs They apparently fixed the missing sound effects in like rain and stuff in 1.01 patch. See part n1 in 2nd post.
As for sound, try sliding sound accelleration down a notch or two, or all the way, see if that fixes it (you can find it by running dxdiag.exe from START, RUN then picking the SOUND tab).
ALSO, one guy tried everything was having crashes bluescreening etc. Turned out it was the nvidia nforce drivers for SOUND. He d/led realtek drivers from thier homepage for his onboard sound. Fixed. Instantly. So if you are crashing or blue screens check that. He installed the drivers after download, didn't bother to uninstall nforce ones or anything.
Note that this solution of realtek drivers is now suggested in official R* patch notes (2nd post part l2).
Direct link to realtek drivers (dont pick 64 bit unless you have XP 64): http://tinyurl.com/808g
Another sound fix: One guy had GTA SA detect his sound as 7.1 when he had headphones, he installed, rebooted, and found GTA SA reset his sound from stereo to 7.1 in windows. And he had crashes and sound probs. He manually set it to stereo again (in windows sound setup. Right click on the little speaker icon, pick adjust audio properties, pick advanced) and it was fixed, no more crashes. As well you might want to try Quadraphonic.
One guy said for Missing Sounds like ambient etc that setting his SB Live card to quadraphonic worked for him.
bi0h4z4rd suggests experimenting with UseEAX=False Use3DSound=False in the stream.ini file to fix some sound issues. If this works for you or doesn't work for you, please reply and let me know.
Very Loud noise after alt tab or saving on a creative card. bi0h4z4rd let me know that it was fixed for him by running autoupdate from creative's site for his drivers and letting it update everything it found. Link is up top in driver section.
There are a couple other solutions for clicks/pops/missing sound/sync/etc like replacing a EAX.DLL file in the game folder, and downgrading to direct x 9.0b that have helped a few people. Detailed info on that is in this link that has a number of audio fixes collected into 1 thread by Overture: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195220
For save file corruption: try a) reinstalling game or b) reinstalling on your windows drive game. The last part fixed it for someone I know who had save file corruption EVERY time he saved. Another person in forums posted that it was the . (a period) in his windows username that was screwing things up. You can make a new username to fix this (you MIGHT be able to rename as well, but renaming does not change your my docs folder name so I'm not 100% sure if that works)
A long involved fix with hex editing to avoid a new user name or a rename of your username is at the stickied post by gtac_madlib here:
Alt Tab info (and possibly mouse): Alt Tab works for me usually. BUT usually you need to click the minimized task at the bottom to switch back (dont use alt-tab to switch back). Its a good idea to save first, if the menu is all flickering and you cant select anything, alt tab did not work and you will need to hit alt tab again and use task manager to kill it. Then start the game again.
Note that installing the nvidia drivers included with the Battlefield 2 demo (have not tried retail or latest nvidia drivers) caused my GTA SA to blue screen every time I did Alt Tab from GTA SA. Reverting to nvidia earlier driver version fixed this.
Some Mouse Issues: For mouse problems where mouse stops working or doesn't work (except if its from alt tabbing. See Alt tabbing above), one person said that running game in windows 98 compatability mode fixed it for him.
Lots of crash/bluescreen/startup failure, and nothing happens after you run the game info:
For R* official info check 2nd post parts h1, i1, j1, s1, i2, k2, l2, m2, o2.
Again, if your game doesn't start, starts but goes to black screen, starts and crashes, crashes after you play a while, starts with sound and no video, bluescreens/BSOD errors, etc, all these solutions here under the crash section are worth looking at. When I say crash, I mean any of the above unless specifically stated in the workaround. Increased visability for the people who are still missing this.
"my game used to work well and now it doesn't." All these crash solutions can be applied in that case as well. Especially the compat mode and realtek info. Some solutions here are specifically for that problem.
Check the other sections, especially sound section.
Bolded since some ppl are missing this.
Some stop errors and crashes were fixed by following the tips in the sound section, especially if you have an nforce mobo with realtek sound, or have a codec issue (often from codec packs). See the sound section.
Note that codec packs are very bad for many games, and GTA SA is no differant. Crashes on startup can be related to this. Nemo is especially well known to be evil, but problems with Ace mega pack and K-Lite codec pack have been mentioned by some people. Uninstall any codec packs, and see if the game works. Really you should only need Xvid (includes Divx), and AC3 filter codecs. And if you use VLC, you wont need any since it has them all built in as plugins so they dont screw your computer.
If the game crashes after running nice before (or nothing happens when you click the GTA SA icon), try deleting or moving the GTA_SA.SET file (it has the options and settings for the game, save games are not affected by this file), and/or getting a replacement below (this solution is now officially reccomended by R* see 2nd post part m2.
If you have a crash on the ADVANCED option in graphics setup, try getting a replacement gta_sa.set file that is already set to medium, 800x600x16 etc. Sometimes that helps. This post by Overture has details and the file.
One guy had the game do nothing after he ran it. He found out that he had some screwed up savegames in his folder. When he deleted those, game started again.
Another guy had the game do nothing when he ran it, after it had been running fine. He disabled ATI hydravision (I think in the graphics driver config in windows) and it started working again.
Also try win98 compatability mode if you are having crashes (especially on startup) too. Several people have said win98 mode worked for them. Another guy who had issues starting tried win 2000 compatability mode and it successfully started the game. Right click on the .exe file to find this option.
For the game just quitting suddenly to desktop after the intro, ricoh suggested playing as another user. It fixed it for him and another guy. Per R* see 2nd post part m2 (you will need to have the new user be admin). Then ricoh says:
"You may have to create a new user. -->control panel--->users and passwords--->add user.
Go to the gta exe hold down shift and right click on it. Run as.... whoever your user is.
This should do the trick."
This is probably the username with . problem thats mentioned in 2nd post part h1.
Another guy confirmed that his crash on startup (it went black like it was loading then crashed to desktop) was caused by the WindowsBlinds program. This is now officially mentioned by R* see 2nd post part m2. The guy disabled that and the game worked fine for him. Since this is a popular question, WindowsBlinds is a program that "skins" windows, makes new graphics for buttons, etc.
Screenshots of what the program does to your windows here: http://www.stardock....screenshots.asp
If you dont know what this is, you probably dont have it installed. If it was installed it would be in your ADD/REMOVE programs list.
Strangelove points out a notable exception:
"Alienware is shipping new systems with the Alienware GUIse, which is built on WindowsBlinds. I was having the same trouble, and uninstalling the Alienware GUIse fixed it completely. Hope this helps some of my fellow Alienware customers."
Another suggestion for crashes, dunno if it works:
in stream.ini: change memory to 256000, and devkit_memory to 256000
bi0h4z4rd suggested that this increased setting may work best if you have a gig or more of ram. Try it and see.
Another idea to help crashes and other things from some unknown guy:
"You need to disable Windows XP SP2 Data Execution Prevention. To do this, right-click on My Computer > Properties (or just hit Winkey+Break) > Advanced > under the last section Startup and Recovery, click Settings > click Edit > the last option in the last line should read "NoExecute=OptIn". Change this to NoExecute=AlwaysOff > Reboot system > Problem solved. "
On my computer I have a crash every time at the end of the mission briefing from Og Loc: "Management Issues"
You can press spacebar or hit mouse button to skip briefing, and then there's no crash. If you watched the briefing until it crashed you saw it all. To confirm, here's a link to all the words said in mission briefings by every character in the game if you want to check: http://db.gamefaqs.c...o_sa_script.txt
There's a rumor that forcing "WMI Performance Adapter" to enable in XP services will fix some crashes. However that service has to do with like remote operations and usually disabling services not enabling them fixes issues. Only one guy I've seen said it fixed it for him, and later it started messing up again. If you want details check:
But until I get confirmation I'm regarding this as a rumor.
I ran the game once, and it didn't work again. One solution (there are others, try the rest of stuff in this FAQ) is described here. One guy had this problem. He had alcohol 120% running on his computer. Ran game once, and wouldn't run again. Reinstalling didn't help. So he uninstalled that program, then reinstalled the game. It worked. Again, check the rest of the crash AND sound section for additional possible fixes.
chrisy_mac has a couple of interesting ideas to fix this. One is the delete gta_sa.set file which I've mentioned in other sections. Another one has to do with using the RUN AS USER in windows. Perhaps this gets around the username issue with the "." or other special character in it. See R* info in 2nd post part h1. Anyway its probably worth a try. His post with details is here: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=196303
Invisible/ghost people fix. Several people have had this problem. If you have a Radeon 9000, 9200, or 9250 then its been known that installing the 4.9 Cataylist drivers for your card will correct this problem. If not try the steps below.
Remember to delete the old "gta_sa.set" file. One person tried this driver solution a bunch of times along with many other things and couldn't fix it. Then he deleted the "gta_sa.set" file when he changed drivers and it works now.
For other people changing res to 800x600x16 worked as a workaround.
If you have a laptop check near start for information on updating drivers if your manufacture is slow on releasing laptop drivers. This fixed it for one laptop user.
Black Roads problem: This is now officially mentioned by R*. Check 2nd post parts i1, p2.
Aeutius found out how to fix it for most people. His first post just has the link for the main nvidia tweak tool to fix: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195879
This link further down by him has other tools for ati and nvidia if the first one doesn't work:
Monitor issues: One guy had an issue where his monitor was blank or displaying OUT OF RANGE or SYNC etc. Obviously the game was trying to do a refresh rate his monitor could not display. He used RefreshForce to force it to 60 hz and it was fixed.
Also check 2nd post parts u1, u2.
Memory testing: One thing to try is to check your memory. Easiest way is to run memtest is to go here:
Download the basic version of the ultimate boot cd (only about 80 megs). Burn the image, boot from the cd. Pick Mainboard, then memtest. This cd has tons of troubleshooting and diags on it, including hdd checkers from every manufacture, and anti virus, etc.
Multiplayer info: The game does not have multiplayer, but the group that did the MP mod for VC is working on a MP mod for SA as well last I heard.
Right Analog Stick non functional: The right analog stick not working is a fairly well known issues for a number of games with the PS2 controler and adapters. You just have to hope that rockstar fixes it, or play around with your config for the adapter if there is one. Make sure its not seeing the stick as a slider, one guy said that was his problem.
He found some registry stuff to edit for his USB adapter from radioshack that fixed his.
One guy fixed it by inverting some axis or something.
One guy here fixed his up partly with help of a gamepad keyboard key emulator called Joy2Key:
Ok I did a bit of searching on google. I came up with 3 websites that should give you enough info to be able to fix this on almost any controller by manually reassigning the axis. It would take you a while, and I'm not sure what to reassign them from or too, but its possible.
Using your own mp3s:
See official R* info in 2nd post parts s1, z1, a2, b2, d2, e2.
Put your music files (note you can do shortcuts to your music folder so you dont take up extra hdd space) here:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\User Tracks
You can just make a shortcut to your music folder and put it in that folder.
Most of the options discussed here for music tracks are in OPTIONS, AUDIO, USER TRACK OPTIONS menu.
Since so many ppl have issues with this. REMEMBER TO MANUALLY SCAN IN THE TRACKS in the audio menu in GTA SA after you put them there. Or turn on Auto scan and it will scan in all your mp3s. Just be aware it takes a while to scan if you have a lot, and if you have auto scan on it will take a while for the game to start with lods of mp3s. After it scans, you should turn off the auto scan on startup feature if you dont want it to scan for new music every startup. IMPORTANT! the game does not support mp3 by default. You'll need WMP 9 or 10, or latest quicktime with mp3 support (as per readme file). To test if missing codecs is your issue, add some OGG files to the game. If it plays the OGGs, thats your problem.
A good detailed post by dertyjerzian on all this with some additional ideas is here:
One thing mentioned by Majuub on that thread is that a modem card often has sound plugs and sound stuff that can screw up things. Try disabling the soundcard part of the modem (check the thread for details), that fixed it for him.
A point mentioned by Victor in same thread on pg 2 says that a non standard location for mydocs/save game (from like hex editing to work around the "." problem perhaps?) can cause issues for your own songs.
"Fender Ketchup" mission prob or other missions getting stuck in a cut scene,
See official R* info in 2nd post part v2. Essentially you may need to turn on frame limiter. Many people (including me)have issues with this mission where during the cutscene, the guys car kept getting stuck as he pulled out. Skipping the cutscene fixed it. The normal skipping keys didn't work for me (mouse button, etc) however the shift key worked for me. I belive I have default key setup for that key.
Quick way to make unlimited money:
Goto this map: http://db.gamefaqs.c..._sa_secrets.png
Look north west of your starting area at the big group of highways coming together. You will see a purple spot marked INSIDE TRACK. Go there. Bet some money on horses (I often win with the 4th horse down). I must have won at least 80% of the time with 1:10 odds. I first bet 20k, which turned into 200k. Then I bet 50k which turned into 500k, then I bet 100k which turned into 1 million. Fast easy way to make money in minutes.
Wondering why you keep losing muscle? I was. Then I found out it was because I was starving from not eating. Always keep a few percent of fat. Then not eating takes away fat instead of muscle. When my fat is gone I just go and eat about 10 meals at once and I get a few percent of fat again.
Trouble finding Import/Export Cars? I found that the list here with clickable pictures of every car you need, and where such cars are parked is a big help:
Another list that has pics (small ones) of every land vehicle:
How can I use the skateboard? Apparently one guy found out how to edit the game to include the skateboard that R* was working on but never finished.
Info here: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195620
Wanna play a hidden mini game to screw the girlfriends?
Check this page out (includes screenshots and a video). Warning! Back up the saves first. You must start a new game. According to the info about this. http://www.gtasanand...gle.php?id=1436
Note: This is the infamous "hot coffee" mod that has caused such an uproar and made the game get rated AO. This also caused the 1.01 patch to be released that disables it. It has been removed by the mod creator but you can probably find it if you google it.
If you are insanely bored. This guy beat the game in 7 hours straight through on ps2. Of course he had beat it before many times and was going for the absolute minimum possible missions. For 100% completion, normally takes 50 hours if you beat it before, and easily 150 hours if you haven't beaten it before. You can watch 7 hours if you like.
Editing game config and cheats:
http://www.gtasanandreas.net This site has info on editing your ini to increase cars visible etc (well I thought it did. I cant find the ini info now. The file is STREAM.INI and has things like vehicles 12 increase that to make more vehicles possible onscreen).
And for those n00bs who like the cheat (make sure to read R* info on 2nd post part w2 about savegames before cheating), this should be a complete list of cheat codes:
bi0h4z4rd pointed out that there's a file in \Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\data called handling.cfg that has all the handling data from all the cars. Mass, top speed, turning, etc. If you want to play around you can change cars to be as fast as infernus or as heavy as the rhino, etc. Make sure to MAKE A BACKUP FIRST, you can edit it with notepad or a similar text editor.

erm no can do its not there all the files i have are galleries and user tracks
Well, I'm not sure what could be causing the crash. This problem happens mostly on Vista, not on XP. And usually updating video drivers fixes it.
Try right clicking the EXE For SA, Click properties, click the Compatibilty tab, choose Windows 98, then click apply then ok.

Okay, i have a weird problem. When i attempt to play the game it says i need to install directX 9.0, i already have it, but installing it again is easy stuff right? Go to explore the disk and manually setup the DirectX (Or click setup DirectX from the autorun ). So when i do install it, i click next to start it, and it instantly jumps me to the finish screen with nothing installed, and i cannot play the game still for the same reason, it says i need directX 9.0C. I ALREADY HAVE IT! And to make sure it maybe was the disk, i put another game in and installed ITS directX 9.0C, and still nothing. I cannot play the game. I will try and delete that thing, the file and see if that works. I rather doubt it.
Try rolling the driver back to 9.0b and then install 9.0c again.

Do you have Vista? If yes, then your savegames go in: C:\Users\your username\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files.
If you're running the game under Windows 98 compatibility, you savegames will be in: C:\Users\your username\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files.

im not using vista im using XP but it still wont put the GTA san andreas user files in
Search for a file named gta_sa.set and move it to the User Files folder in My Documents.
Btw, what is your Windows User Account name?
