Technical FAQ: (If replying to this, only quote relevant portion, not all of it please)
If there are any other working solutions and they aren't in my FAQ, please reply and let me know about them so I can add them or link them. I want this to be complete as possible. Thanks!

R* JUST released a patch 1.01 for GTA SA. Unfortunately it took that whole hot coffee fiasco to do it and they are of course disabling that in the patch. See the 2nd post for details of the patch.
official Link to d/l etc: http://www.nomorehotcoffee.com/
Info on what the patch does/fixes and an official FAQ follow below in the 2nd post. I will be updating this FAQ to indicate which problems are possibly fixed in patch.

Make sure to mention what version of the game you have if you post here about a problem or if you PM me.

Update drivers, both sound and graphics. Make sure you are running DX 9. Not 10 mins ago I got a msg from a guy who bluescreened, updated sound drivers and it was fixed.
Nvidia latest driver is 71.89 (note that the 77.30 drivers in Battlefield 2 blue screen when alt tabbing for me).
Ati JUST released a new driver Catalyst 5.6
If you dont know what version you have, its outdated and needs to be updated.
Audigy 2 zs XP drivers: http://tinyurl.com/ad674
bi0h4z4rd let me know that you can update the drivers for creative cards by picking autoupdate and letting it update all the things it asks about here:
http://www.creative....ownloads/su.asp
Dell laptop 5150/5160 custom inf drivers (helps fix invisible people if you have this issue and this laptop, for other computers try the other possible fixes below in that section):
http://www.laptopvid...?showtopic=6062
For some other inf files for drivers on laptops try this:

Minimum Graphics Card info and tips: <inimum of Geforce 3 generation cards reccomended but not nessasarily required (GF4mx info follows).
R* Official answer (see 2nd post) is that you need a graphics card with at least 64 megs of memory, but its possible to run it with even less. Running it with less increases chance of "black roads issue). See 2nd post parts i1, g2, h2.
Someone mentioned a radeon 9100 with issues in 32 bit color. If I'm not mistaken thats a DX 8 generation card so thats probably why it doesn't work properly.
I have heard from someone with a GF4mx (this was a bad card to buy, all reviews stated it, and it was more expensive than gf3 or gf 4200 in many case, both of which were better). Anyway, he had a gf4mx 440 and got it running in the game using omega 1.6177 drivers. Another guy got it running with nvidia drivers with gf4mx. So apparently gf4mx works.
Official answer from take 2 (publisher of the game) in their official support section for GTA SA PC about the geforce 4 mx440:
http://www.take2game...asa&section=faq
I also heard from someone with a geforce 2. He said he can run the game as well. Again, note that you will probably have graphical issues with how the game works, might have to use 16 bit to get it to look better or work at all, but at least it CAN work.
Again, older cards try 16 bit color and try leaving framerate limiter on. I have had someone say this gets some cards to work great.

Performance tips (graphical and lagging and chugging hdd with popups): For performance, try turning down/off AA. Try toggling Frame Rate Limiter, it limits framerate to 25 fps. In some situations its better to have off, in some better to have on. Change it from whatever it is.

bi0h4z4rd says "Suggest people play in 16bit, 32bit lags ALOT and includes things like overhead wire shadows, dynamic shadows, etc. doing so can get 50-80fps" He says that he doesn't notice any color loss in 16 bit mode. He also suggests editing the stream.ini to reduce number of cars on screen at one time (bottom of the faq has some info on editing that file). He also says to try playing with the vsync setting UseVSync in the stream.ini

One guy found out how to fix his hdd chugging and lagging the game. He ran a benchmark of his C: hard drive where his games are and found out it was 10 times slower than his other hard drive. He moved it and found the game worked much better (later he found out he was using PIO mode, PIO mode is bad period for hdds or cd/dvd drives). Keep in mind that since there's no "loading" screen it has to load everything dynamically as you play.
PIO mode selection is in control panel, system, hardware tab, device manager, and then IDE controllers.

Camera Controls and the "I want it like VC tips", and spinning camera issue:
Many people are asking about camera controls.
There are essentially two hugely differant modes in GTA SA. One is joystick mode and one is mouse mode. You can use joystick mode even without a joystick plugged in if you want the things it offers. Both modes have auto follow camera in car, if you are mousing just leave mouse alone for sec and it will follow.
The gripes I've seen sometimes come from walking mode. In mouse mode, camera does NOT auto adjust or follow behind. In joystick it does. As well in joystick mode it enabled the classic PS2 autoaim/targeting! And you can still use mouse buttons to fire etc.
Basically it seems rockstar assumed you'd want to manually control the camera while walking in mouse mode and manually control aiming/firing. They should have had a toggle for this as well in addition to mouse/joystick switch if you ask me. Something where if you didn't move mouse camera would auto adjust and follow.

Another couple things to try, set mouse to control car instead of look while driving. As well, try changing vehicle cam to Chase cam (V key I think by default).

As for the spinning camera issue where when you get in a car your camera spins all around uncontrolably, check to see if you have a gamepad or joystick plugged in. Unplug it. If that fixes it, that was the problem. In the 2nd post there's R* information on this on part t2. Also on optical mice, underneath where the optical unit is glowing, blow on it, sometimes a piece of dust or hair catches in that area and blocks it.

"No Disc Inserted. Please insert the CD/DVD" Try the solution that ShooBaDoop mentions in this post about temporarily turning off the DLA thingy (the crappy built in XP burning crap). http://www.gtaforums...dpost&p=2892580
Some info that may be released on this is in 2nd post on part m2.

Sound Fixes/Tips:
R* now has some official info on sound issues and fixes. See 2nd post parts n1, q1, c2, i2, l2. Some of these things were already suggested on these boards and FAQs smile.gif They apparently fixed the missing sound effects in like rain and stuff in 1.01 patch. See part n1 in 2nd post.
As for sound, try sliding sound accelleration down a notch or two, or all the way, see if that fixes it (you can find it by running dxdiag.exe from START, RUN then picking the SOUND tab).
ALSO, one guy tried everything was having crashes bluescreening etc. Turned out it was the nvidia nforce drivers for SOUND. He d/led realtek drivers from thier homepage for his onboard sound. Fixed. Instantly. So if you are crashing or blue screens check that. He installed the drivers after download, didn't bother to uninstall nforce ones or anything.
Note that this solution of realtek drivers is now suggested in official R* patch notes (2nd post part l2).
Direct link to realtek drivers (dont pick 64 bit unless you have XP 64): http://tinyurl.com/808g
Another sound fix: One guy had GTA SA detect his sound as 7.1 when he had headphones, he installed, rebooted, and found GTA SA reset his sound from stereo to 7.1 in windows. And he had crashes and sound probs. He manually set it to stereo again (in windows sound setup. Right click on the little speaker icon, pick adjust audio properties, pick advanced) and it was fixed, no more crashes. As well you might want to try Quadraphonic.
One guy said for Missing Sounds like ambient etc that setting his SB Live card to quadraphonic worked for him.

bi0h4z4rd suggests experimenting with UseEAX=False Use3DSound=False in the stream.ini file to fix some sound issues. If this works for you or doesn't work for you, please reply and let me know.

Very Loud noise after alt tab or saving on a creative card. bi0h4z4rd let me know that it was fixed for him by running autoupdate from creative's site for his drivers and letting it update everything it found. Link is up top in driver section.

There are a couple other solutions for clicks/pops/missing sound/sync/etc like replacing a EAX.DLL file in the game folder, and downgrading to direct x 9.0b that have helped a few people. Detailed info on that is in this link that has a number of audio fixes collected into 1 thread by Overture: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195220

For save file corruption: try a) reinstalling game or b) reinstalling on your windows drive game. The last part fixed it for someone I know who had save file corruption EVERY time he saved. Another person in forums posted that it was the . (a period) in his windows username that was screwing things up. You can make a new username to fix this (you MIGHT be able to rename as well, but renaming does not change your my docs folder name so I'm not 100% sure if that works)
A long involved fix with hex editing to avoid a new user name or a rename of your username is at the stickied post by gtac_madlib here:
http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=194371

Alt Tab info (and possibly mouse): Alt Tab works for me usually. BUT usually you need to click the minimized task at the bottom to switch back (dont use alt-tab to switch back). Its a good idea to save first, if the menu is all flickering and you cant select anything, alt tab did not work and you will need to hit alt tab again and use task manager to kill it. Then start the game again.
Note that installing the nvidia drivers included with the Battlefield 2 demo (have not tried retail or latest nvidia drivers) caused my GTA SA to blue screen every time I did Alt Tab from GTA SA. Reverting to nvidia earlier driver version fixed this.

Some Mouse Issues: For mouse problems where mouse stops working or doesn't work (except if its from alt tabbing. See Alt tabbing above), one person said that running game in windows 98 compatability mode fixed it for him.

Lots of crash/bluescreen/startup failure, and nothing happens after you run the game info:
For R* official info check 2nd post parts h1, i1, j1, s1, i2, k2, l2, m2, o2.
Again, if your game doesn't start, starts but goes to black screen, starts and crashes, crashes after you play a while, starts with sound and no video, bluescreens/BSOD errors, etc, all these solutions here under the crash section are worth looking at. When I say crash, I mean any of the above unless specifically stated in the workaround. Increased visability for the people who are still missing this.
"my game used to work well and now it doesn't." All these crash solutions can be applied in that case as well. Especially the compat mode and realtek info. Some solutions here are specifically for that problem.

Check the other sections, especially sound section.
Bolded since some ppl are missing this.
Some stop errors and crashes were fixed by following the tips in the sound section, especially if you have an nforce mobo with realtek sound, or have a codec issue (often from codec packs). See the sound section.

Note that codec packs are very bad for many games, and GTA SA is no differant. Crashes on startup can be related to this. Nemo is especially well known to be evil, but problems with Ace mega pack and K-Lite codec pack have been mentioned by some people. Uninstall any codec packs, and see if the game works. Really you should only need Xvid (includes Divx), and AC3 filter codecs. And if you use VLC, you wont need any since it has them all built in as plugins so they dont screw your computer.

If the game crashes after running nice before (or nothing happens when you click the GTA SA icon), try deleting or moving the GTA_SA.SET file (it has the options and settings for the game, save games are not affected by this file), and/or getting a replacement below (this solution is now officially reccomended by R* see 2nd post part m2.
If you have a crash on the ADVANCED option in graphics setup, try getting a replacement gta_sa.set file that is already set to medium, 800x600x16 etc. Sometimes that helps. This post by Overture has details and the file.
http://www.gtaforums...dpost&p=2893344

One guy had the game do nothing after he ran it. He found out that he had some screwed up savegames in his folder. When he deleted those, game started again.

Another guy had the game do nothing when he ran it, after it had been running fine. He disabled ATI hydravision (I think in the graphics driver config in windows) and it started working again.

Also try win98 compatability mode if you are having crashes (especially on startup) too. Several people have said win98 mode worked for them. Another guy who had issues starting tried win 2000 compatability mode and it successfully started the game. Right click on the .exe file to find this option.

For the game just quitting suddenly to desktop after the intro, ricoh suggested playing as another user. It fixed it for him and another guy. Per R* see 2nd post part m2 (you will need to have the new user be admin). Then ricoh says:
"You may have to create a new user. -->control panel--->users and passwords--->add user.
Go to the gta exe hold down shift and right click on it. Run as.... whoever your user is.
This should do the trick."
This is probably the username with . problem thats mentioned in 2nd post part h1.

Another guy confirmed that his crash on startup (it went black like it was loading then crashed to desktop) was caused by the WindowsBlinds program. This is now officially mentioned by R* see 2nd post part m2. The guy disabled that and the game worked fine for him. Since this is a popular question, WindowsBlinds is a program that "skins" windows, makes new graphics for buttons, etc.
Screenshots of what the program does to your windows here: http://www.stardock....screenshots.asp
If you dont know what this is, you probably dont have it installed. If it was installed it would be in your ADD/REMOVE programs list.
Strangelove points out a notable exception:
"Alienware is shipping new systems with the Alienware GUIse, which is built on WindowsBlinds. I was having the same trouble, and uninstalling the Alienware GUIse fixed it completely. Hope this helps some of my fellow Alienware customers."

Another suggestion for crashes, dunno if it works:
in stream.ini: change memory to 256000, and devkit_memory to 256000
bi0h4z4rd suggested that this increased setting may work best if you have a gig or more of ram. Try it and see.

Another idea to help crashes and other things from some unknown guy:
"You need to disable Windows XP SP2 Data Execution Prevention. To do this, right-click on My Computer > Properties (or just hit Winkey+Break) > Advanced > under the last section Startup and Recovery, click Settings > click Edit > the last option in the last line should read "NoExecute=OptIn". Change this to NoExecute=AlwaysOff > Reboot system > Problem solved. "

On my computer I have a crash every time at the end of the mission briefing from Og Loc: "Management Issues"
You can press spacebar or hit mouse button to skip briefing, and then there's no crash. If you watched the briefing until it crashed you saw it all. To confirm, here's a link to all the words said in mission briefings by every character in the game if you want to check: http://db.gamefaqs.c...o_sa_script.txt

There's a rumor that forcing "WMI Performance Adapter" to enable in XP services will fix some crashes. However that service has to do with like remote operations and usually disabling services not enabling them fixes issues. Only one guy I've seen said it fixed it for him, and later it started messing up again. If you want details check:
http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=197056
But until I get confirmation I'm regarding this as a rumor.

I ran the game once, and it didn't work again. One solution (there are others, try the rest of stuff in this FAQ) is described here. One guy had this problem. He had alcohol 120% running on his computer. Ran game once, and wouldn't run again. Reinstalling didn't help. So he uninstalled that program, then reinstalled the game. It worked. Again, check the rest of the crash AND sound section for additional possible fixes.
chrisy_mac has a couple of interesting ideas to fix this. One is the delete gta_sa.set file which I've mentioned in other sections. Another one has to do with using the RUN AS USER in windows. Perhaps this gets around the username issue with the "." or other special character in it. See R* info in 2nd post part h1. Anyway its probably worth a try. His post with details is here: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=196303

Invisible/ghost people fix. Several people have had this problem. If you have a Radeon 9000, 9200, or 9250 then its been known that installing the 4.9 Cataylist drivers for your card will correct this problem. If not try the steps below.

http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=194524
Remember to delete the old "gta_sa.set" file. One person tried this driver solution a bunch of times along with many other things and couldn't fix it. Then he deleted the "gta_sa.set" file when he changed drivers and it works now.
For other people changing res to 800x600x16 worked as a workaround.
If you have a laptop check near start for information on updating drivers if your manufacture is slow on releasing laptop drivers. This fixed it for one laptop user.

Black Roads problem: This is now officially mentioned by R*. Check 2nd post parts i1, p2.
Aeutius found out how to fix it for most people. His first post just has the link for the main nvidia tweak tool to fix: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195879
This link further down by him has other tools for ati and nvidia if the first one doesn't work:
http://www.gtaforums...dpost&p=2897075

Monitor issues: One guy had an issue where his monitor was blank or displaying OUT OF RANGE or SYNC etc. Obviously the game was trying to do a refresh rate his monitor could not display. He used RefreshForce to force it to 60 hz and it was fixed.
link: http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/
Also check 2nd post parts u1, u2.

Memory testing: One thing to try is to check your memory. Easiest way is to run memtest is to go here:
http://ubcd.sourcefo...t/download.html
Download the basic version of the ultimate boot cd (only about 80 megs). Burn the image, boot from the cd. Pick Mainboard, then memtest. This cd has tons of troubleshooting and diags on it, including hdd checkers from every manufacture, and anti virus, etc.

Multiplayer info: The game does not have multiplayer, but the group that did the MP mod for VC is working on a MP mod for SA as well last I heard.

Right Analog Stick non functional: The right analog stick not working is a fairly well known issues for a number of games with the PS2 controler and adapters. You just have to hope that rockstar fixes it, or play around with your config for the adapter if there is one. Make sure its not seeing the stick as a slider, one guy said that was his problem.
He found some registry stuff to edit for his USB adapter from radioshack that fixed his.
One guy fixed it by inverting some axis or something.
One guy here fixed his up partly with help of a gamepad keyboard key emulator called Joy2Key:
http://hp.vector.co....thors/VA016823/
Ok I did a bit of searching on google. I came up with 3 websites that should give you enough info to be able to fix this on almost any controller by manually reassigning the axis. It would take you a while, and I'm not sure what to reassign them from or too, but its possible.

Using your own mp3s:
See official R* info in 2nd post parts s1, z1, a2, b2, d2, e2.
Put your music files (note you can do shortcuts to your music folder so you dont take up extra hdd space) here:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\User Tracks
You can just make a shortcut to your music folder and put it in that folder.
Most of the options discussed here for music tracks are in OPTIONS, AUDIO, USER TRACK OPTIONS menu.
Since so many ppl have issues with this. REMEMBER TO MANUALLY SCAN IN THE TRACKS in the audio menu in GTA SA after you put them there. Or turn on Auto scan and it will scan in all your mp3s. Just be aware it takes a while to scan if you have a lot, and if you have auto scan on it will take a while for the game to start with lods of mp3s. After it scans, you should turn off the auto scan on startup feature if you dont want it to scan for new music every startup. IMPORTANT! the game does not support mp3 by default. You'll need WMP 9 or 10, or latest quicktime with mp3 support (as per readme file). To test if missing codecs is your issue, add some OGG files to the game. If it plays the OGGs, thats your problem.
A good detailed post by dertyjerzian on all this with some additional ideas is here:
http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=196063
One thing mentioned by Majuub on that thread is that a modem card often has sound plugs and sound stuff that can screw up things. Try disabling the soundcard part of the modem (check the thread for details), that fixed it for him.
A point mentioned by Victor in same thread on pg 2 says that a non standard location for mydocs/save game (from like hex editing to work around the "." problem perhaps?) can cause issues for your own songs.

"Fender Ketchup" mission prob or other missions getting stuck in a cut scene,
See official R* info in 2nd post part v2. Essentially you may need to turn on frame limiter. Many people (including me)have issues with this mission where during the cutscene, the guys car kept getting stuck as he pulled out. Skipping the cutscene fixed it. The normal skipping keys didn't work for me (mouse button, etc) however the shift key worked for me. I belive I have default key setup for that key.

Quick way to make unlimited money:
Goto this map: http://db.gamefaqs.c..._sa_secrets.png
Look north west of your starting area at the big group of highways coming together. You will see a purple spot marked INSIDE TRACK. Go there. Bet some money on horses (I often win with the 4th horse down). I must have won at least 80% of the time with 1:10 odds. I first bet 20k, which turned into 200k. Then I bet 50k which turned into 500k, then I bet 100k which turned into 1 million. Fast easy way to make money in minutes.

Wondering why you keep losing muscle? I was. Then I found out it was because I was starving from not eating. Always keep a few percent of fat. Then not eating takes away fat instead of muscle. When my fat is gone I just go and eat about 10 meals at once and I get a few percent of fat again.

Trouble finding Import/Export Cars? I found that the list here with clickable pictures of every car you need, and where such cars are parked is a big help:
http://www.gta-sanan...xport/index.php
Another list that has pics (small ones) of every land vehicle:
http://gtadomain.gta...g.com/land.html

How can I use the skateboard? Apparently one guy found out how to edit the game to include the skateboard that R* was working on but never finished.
Info here: http://www.gtaforums...howtopic=195620

Wanna play a hidden mini game to screw the girlfriends?
Check this page out (includes screenshots and a video). Warning! Back up the saves first. You must start a new game. According to the info about this. http://www.gtasanand...gle.php?id=1436
Note: This is the infamous "hot coffee" mod that has caused such an uproar and made the game get rated AO. This also caused the 1.01 patch to be released that disables it. It has been removed by the mod creator but you can probably find it if you google it.

If you are insanely bored. This guy beat the game in 7 hours straight through on ps2. Of course he had beat it before many times and was going for the absolute minimum possible missions. For 100% completion, normally takes 50 hours if you beat it before, and easily 150 hours if you haven't beaten it before. You can watch 7 hours if you like.
http://www.gamershel...news/22611.html

Editing game config and cheats:
http://www.gtasanandreas.net This site has info on editing your ini to increase cars visible etc (well I thought it did. I cant find the ini info now. The file is STREAM.INI and has things like vehicles 12 increase that to make more vehicles possible onscreen).
And for those n00bs who like the cheat (make sure to read R* info on 2nd post part w2 about savegames before cheating), this should be a complete list of cheat codes:
http://www.gamefaqs....ode/924362.html
bi0h4z4rd pointed out that there's a file in \Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\data called handling.cfg that has all the handling data from all the cars. Mass, top speed, turning, etc. If you want to play around you can change cars to be as fast as infernus or as heavy as the rhino, etc. Make sure to MAKE A BACKUP FIRST, you can edit it with notepad or a similar text editor.

Latest Patch info:

R* released 1.01 patch on August 9th/10th 2005. Unfortunately it took the whole hot coffee fiasco to get them to release a patch this "soon." But at least they fixed a bunch of bugs and things that people had issues with.
Link to d/l patch:
http://www.nomorehotcoffee.com/

Below are the additions and fixes from one of the readme files in the patch. (instructions for installing patch are first) Following that the FAQ thats included in the patch will be pasted in as well.

NOTE: I have added letter names to each bulletpoint so that I can more easily reference specific parts in the FAQ.

QUOTE
INSTALLATION
--------------

a1) - Launch the updater EXE file.

b1) - Confirm that you are using the correct updater for the specific version of GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas you are using.

c1) - Use the file requester to locate the directory where you installed GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas (the directory which contains the gta_sa.exe file).

d1) - If the updater recognises the gta_sa.exe file as the correct version, it will begin the update process.

e1) - To confirm that you are using the updated version, we display the version number 1.01 on the main menu page.

QUOTE
ADDITIONS
-----------

f1) - Added support for 720p and 1080i HDTV resolutions (may also do 1080p, not sure).

g1) - Version Number displayed on game title screen.

BUGS FIXED
------------

h1) - Issue fixed on machines where the OS has been updated (one OS installed over top of another) and has 2 registry keys that point to the users "My Documents" folder (we incorrectly used to assume the Win2000 folder, now correctly uses the last installed OS folder) - users know this as "user account period bug".

i1) - Crash when entering advanced display options with only 32 meg of video ram (32 meg of video ram is not supported and will only allow use of 640*480 in 16 and 32 bit. At this resolution it is likely you will see the "Black Roads" LOD problem). We do NOT however disallow machines with 32 meg of video ram from running GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas.

j1) - Crash when entering advanced display options on a dual monitor machine after :- starting game on primary monitor in maximum resolution, exiting, starting again in maximum resolution on secondary monitor. Secondary monitor maximum resolution had to be greater than maximum resolution of primary monitor.

k1) - Destroyed cars now are correct colour.

l1) - Dirty cars now able to get clean.

m1) - Numpad 5 key is now mappable when re-defining controls.

n1) - Issue on all machines where certain collisions caused parts of the audio system to crash (sound effects, cutscene audio - only radio keeps going) - users know this as "Rain / Thunderstorm bug".

o1) - Improvements to DVD streaming.

p1) - Audio problems in interior / exterior transitions and getting in / out of cars fixed.

q1) - Some fixes to ensure reverb is not present at certain save points.

r1) - Improvements to dance game timings.

s1) - Crash occuring when using "user radio files" while the frame limiter is disabled.

Here's the text from the patch FAQ:
QUOTE

t1) Q: Why does the "Heat Haze" effect look weird on my ATI graphics card?
A: The Heat Haze effect has been noticed to be corrupt when using ATI 4.x series drivers - this seems cured on 5.x series ATI drivers.

u1) Q: Why does running GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas on my laptop not offer me widescreen screen modes, when the screen on my laptop is a widescreen display?
A: Some laptop widescreen displays are not a standard aspect ratio. GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas only supports 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, and those closely related to them. You may also find some resolutions are not offered as usable at all by GRAND THEFT AUTO : San Andreas because they deviate too much from 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios.

v1) Q: Why do the buildings in the world take time to catch up with me when I drive in a fast vehicle in a built up area?
A: Most likely you have disabled the Frame Limiter, or your Hard Drive is not supplying world data at a fast enough rate. Re-enabling the Frame Limiter will help this.

w1) Q: Why am I having difficulty setting up 2 control pads at the same time?
A: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas can only support one external device.

x1) Q: I cannot complete donuts in the first "Driving School" test.
A: The key setup you are using may not allow the reporting of the 3 necessary keys at the same time, you may have to re-define keys to allow this to be detected correctly.

y1) Q: Why do I get missing and flashing textures in 16 bit graphics modes?
A: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas was developed specifically for 32 bit screen modes. Although playing in 16 bit modes are supported, this will result in a much poorer experience and the game may not play as intended.

z1) Q: Why do I only hear advertisements when listening to the User Track Player?
A: Check that any shortcuts in the "My Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\User Tracks" are valid and that they have been scanned using the Scan User Tracks function in the User Track Options menu submenu of the Audio Setup menu. If trying to playback MP3, M4A or WMA tracks you may need to install Windows Media Player, QuickTime or a third party codec pack.

a2) Q: Why does GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas take a long time to start up if I have lots of music files or shortcuts in my User Tracks folder?
A: This occurs when Automatic Media Scan is set to ON in the User Track Options. Turning off the Automatic Media Scan will make loading faster and, in sequential mode, will stop the User Track Player from returning to the first track after the game loads.

b2) Q: Why does GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas always start on the same track when in sequential mode?
A: This occurs when Automatic Media Scan is set to ON in the User Track Options menu. Turning off the Automatic Media Scan will stop the User Track Player from returning to the first track after the game loads.

c2) Q: I don't have a soundcard in my PC (or I don't have the drivers for my soundcard installed) - Can I run GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas on my PC?
A: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas requires a soundcard to be present, and will refuse to run without one.

d2) Q: Should I install the Radio Stations to Hard Drive whilst installing GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas?
A: Most computers will benefit from playing the Radio Stations from Hard Drive. Exceptions to this would be computers with poor Hard Drive performance - these will benefit from playing the Radio Stations from DVD.

e2) Q: When I installed GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas I selected the full install option to play the Radio Stations from my Hard Drive. Do I still need the GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas DVD in my DVD-ROM drive to play?
A: Yes. You must have the GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas DVD in your DVD-ROM drive at all times.

f2) Q: I don't want to upgrade my finely honed DirectX 8.1 system to DirectX 9; can I still play GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas without DirectX 9?
A: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas must have DirectX9 installed.

NEW
-----

g2) Q: Do GeForce 4MX cards run GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas?
A: Though they are technically poorer than the minimum spec quoted for the game (GeForce 3), the game does run with these, though they are very slow and as a result not recommended.

h2) Q: The minimum graphic card spec is quoted as a 64 meg GeForce 3 or better. Does this mean my 32 meg video card won't work?
A: We don't specifically lock out cards that have less memory than 64 megabytes BUT they are not recommended as they are only able to run in the 640*480 resolution and will be un-acceptably slow.

i2) Q: When I attempt to launch GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas my computer reboots?
A: Disabling the AUTO REBOOT option from System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery will allow the generated Windows blue screen error to be viewed. Mostly these blue screens will probably show hardware problems or driver problems.
A: Try lowering the Sound Acceleration setting from Full to Standard.

j2) Q: Can I use HDTV modes?
A: With patch 1.01 we have added support for the following HDTV modes :- 720p + 1080i. Please note this support depends upon setting these modes correctly via your video drivers AND the selected display correctly supporting these modes.

k2) Q: Will overclocking my graphics card make a difference to GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas?
A: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas can and does stress different parts of a GPU to "normal" PC games. We have noticed machines which will overheat while running GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas that do not overheat with other games. As a consequence we do not recommend overclocking with this title. Often results of overheating in GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas can be seen as 3d models having spikes caused by vertices becoming corrupted, reboots and VPU recovery errors on ATI video cards.

l2) Q: My Nforce motherboard based computer (with a Realtek based on-board sound chip) keeps re-booting and / or crashing with a blue screen?
A: We have had reports of old Nvidia drivers doing this. Try updating the Nvidia sound drivers, or changing to Realtek authored drivers to cure this problem.

m2) Q: GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas does not start when I launch it, it just returns to the desktop?
A: You may have a corrupt settings file. Try deleting you GTA_SA.SET file.
A: You need to have administrative priviliges to run GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas.
A: If you are using WindowBlinds, you will need to add a manual exclusion for GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas so WindowBlinds applies no skinning.
A: It may be that your DVD-ROM device requires a firmware update. Check if the manufacturers have updated the firmware and if so is it documented to cure security incompatabilities.
A: Your DVD-ROM could be incompatible with the security system we use. Browse to the directory that you installed GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas into, and right click on the gta-sa.exe file and select ANALYSIS. This will create a file in the root of drive C: Send this analysis file to us ONLY if requested.
A: You could be running a virtual-drive type program. Please close any software such as this before launching GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas
A: You may have Sonic DLA or Windows XP's inbuilt CD writing enabled. Try disabling these and re-launching GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas.

n2) Q: I have a joypad connected, however I don't see any joypad buttons listed when I go into the Controller setup screens?
A: The first time you go to the controller setup screen, if you do not have a joypad connected, then the game sets itself up to not use a joypad. If you subsequently go back to these screens with a joypad connected you should reset the controls to default and you will find the default joypad controls have been applied.

o2) Q: When I start GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas there is a black screen with some music playing behind it before I get to the intro scene with CJ in the Airport?
A: These are the Rockstar logo movies and the game intro movie playing back with no video being output. We have found that this is a symptom of using older Nvidia video drivers - we observed this with 67.02, and found it cured when we upgraded to 71.89.

p2) Q: Roads in the mid distance have a very noticeable black shadowed look that clears up as I get closer.
A: Try making sure you are not forcing Bi-Linear or Tri-Linear filtering to ON in your video drivers. Set MipMapping in GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas Display Options to OFF. Use Anistropic Filtering for the best look in game (you will need to force this ON in your video drivers control panel). Increasing the screen resolution will also push this distance further out.

q2) Q: When I Install GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas I get the message "The file C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\audio\SFX\SPC_GA doesnít match the file in the setupís .cab file" ?
A: Could be a faulty DVD disk. Try installing on a different DVD-ROM or different computer to confirm this. If you cannot install on other computers or devices then try returning the disk.
A: Could be a faulty DVD-ROM drive. Try installing on a different DVD-ROM or different computer to confirm this.
A: Could be lack of free space to unpack the sound effect file on drive C:
A: Could be lack of swap space to unpack the sound effect file.
A: Try copying the entire DVD contents to a hard drive and try installation from there.
A: Could be faulty RAM.
A: (Advanced) This file is the largest file distributed with GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas, being just over 1 gigabyte in size. Problems with this file could be indicative of a lack of free space to unpack the file or faulty memory or a badly setup swap file (try setting the size of your swap file to 2 * current ram size) or combinations of all three.

r2) Q: I use UltraMon?
A: Make sure you update to version 2.6.

s2) Q: Logitech Setpoint gives a buffer over-run error when I push the middle mouse (wheel) button?
A: Update to latest available version (version 2.40) and make sure you have game detection set to on, otherwise some buttons will not function as expected.

t2) Q: I cannot aim using the right mouse button and / or when I get in the car and drive the camera constantly rotates around the car?
A: Make sure that you do not have another analogue device attached which also provides mouse emulation. Examples of this would be analogue joysticks, remote controls etc.

u2) Q: I start the game in the highest resolution that the game offers to me. When I get into game I find some of the screen is not drawn, and the part that is drawn suffers from heavy ghosting / double images?
A: This will be the game using a scrollable resolution. When you set your desktop to this same resolution you will find that pushing your mouse pointer to the edges of the screen will cause it to scroll to allow you to see the full extent of the desktop. You will find that by installing the correct monitor INF file that you can properly enable supported resolutions for your graphics card.

v2) Q: On the mission Fender Ketchup, the game will not progress past the opening cutscene where the garage door opens and shuts too quickly. I have the frame limiter switched off on my <really fast> PC?.
A: If you find a cutscene not progressing like this, enabling the frame limiter will allow the timing in the cutscene to work correctly and allow you to progress past this point.

w2) Q: I input some cheats to GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas and then saved over the top of the one save file I have been using. Now when I load up this save it crashes instantly and / or acts weird.
A: Saving while cheats are enabled is not supported. Do not save after inputing cheats to the game.

Holy sh** thank you so much for some odd reason my hdd was in pio mode and i had no idea! I fixed it and the game plays smooth as butter and my system feels 10 times faster altogether. BTw the quick fix for fixing your drive being stuck on PIO mode (even if it is set to use udma) is to go to device manager then under ide controllers find the channel the drive is on (primary or secondary) and then go to the driver tab of that channel and click uninstall and reboot your computer then reboot again when it prompts you to after it installs the driver and it should be fixed. THANKS!

Great complilation, only one thing I noticed:

QUOTE
Minimum Graphics Card info and tips: You need minimum of Geforce 3 generation cards (GF4mx info follows).
Someone mentioned a radeon 9100 with issues in 32 bit color. If I'm not mistaken thats a DX 8 generation card so thats probably why it doesn't work properly.

GeForce 3 is also a DX 8 generation card, so if the Radeon 9100 is also, thats not a reason for this card not to work. My guess would be its not a very good chipset, like the GF4.

Thanks for all the good info, and links colgate.gif

Its ok but not very organized. "Some guy" is used way too many times and no credit is given. Also few links to where the problem was first mentioned.
Plus at the end you start talking about mini-games which is not apart of the original subject of the thread.

Mostly because often, I was hanging out in one of the GTA SA IRC channels, and some random guy would message me and say he had a problem with so and so and fixed it this way. Or would point me towards various forum posts (usually not on this board) that didn't give credit from where they got the stuff.
Where I can I give links to the thread where they figured it out, so that the credit is apparant from the content at the link.
As for mini games, its in my sub title of the topic, that it has gameplay FAQs as well smile.gif

And I say repeatedly some guy, and it fixed it for etc so that people realize this is not just me talking out my butt. These are solutions that really did help some people to play. Otherwise they look at it (especially the driver part at the start) and think, this is just some BS about drivers, I know that already (even if most of the time they dont have it updated) and some other basic crap that can apply to anything, not just GTA SA. Whereas in reality, almost every single thing I mention are things that actually worked for people who did it. And yes, I have gotten messages in IRC from people who are like this heh. And messages from other kinds of people too. Just yesterday I got a message from someone who did not know how to delete a file. Another guy claimed to have followed every part of my FAQ, but when I asked him specific questions about methods, he actually hadn't.

Yeah I'm working on organization, right now its just a big collection of fixes. It looks better than it started out though, trust me smile.gif Feel free to respond with any ideas you have on organizing it.

The tinyurl link you have to the Soundblaster Audigy is for a driver from Nov 2003.

The latest driver is from May 12, 2005 here.

Sound Fixes/Tips: As for sound, try sliding sound accelleration down a notch or two, or all the way, see if that fixes it (you can find it by running dxdiag.exe from START, RUN then picking the SOUND tab).

I have a DFI Lanparty 250Gb with nforce audio and I was getting very frequent bluescreens. This seems to have fixed it for me. Thanks smile.gif

"Fender Ketchup" mission prob One guy had a problem with this mission where during the cutscene, the guys car kept getting stuck as he pulled out. Skipping the cutscene fixed it.

This happened to me.

Normally cut-scenes can be skipped using the "primary fire" or "enter/exit vehicle" keys. In this case I had to use the key I had bound to "sprint". That was the only one that would skip the cut-scene. And even then I had to wait a few seconds before the skip would work.

Maybe try cat 4.9
Some people had issues with the latest cats and GTA SA.

Try running the setup.exe file instead. The install.exe is just a launcher, not needed to run it.

Googlsta ~

I don't have a game pad, but I've noticed that this has become the current trend heading for the newer topics now that a lot of things have been resolved. I also think that any problems to do with the joypad players' buttons acting screwy after working fine may stem from one of the "fixes" found here. Namely, all the gta_sa.set files we've all rounded up. If you add a joypad section to your FAQ once there is some material, remember to include that this could be caused by their button configurations being fully remapped, as many of the settings files have had custom key configurations. C ya round the boards. I am impressed by that post.

Try using search in windows to find the set file. Its in your my docs folder.

As for windows blinds, thats a popular question so I'll update my FAQ with what it is and how to find it.

Since you dont know, odds are that you dont have it installed. Try some of the other solutions, like the compat modes, etc.
