how do you turn off the thing in photoshop where when you move an image say it jumps to rest on the canvas walls? you know what i mean?

I don't think you can turn it off, i hunted round for an option but could'nt find anything.

I have no idea what you mean, but it sounds like you mean Snap.

You can turn it off:

View>Snap (Ctrl+Shift+; )

You can choose what it snaps to (canvas, grid, guides, docbounds, etc).
