Okay, I've played through all three of the PS2 GTAs. I know that the GTA3 main character's name is Claude. But all over the internet people have been calling him Claud Speed. Where did the last name come from?

Who knows? Who cares? It sounds good. Let's leave it at that.

Maybe it's because he drives really fast in the games. confused.gif

Yes, great post. You really contributed...

Anyway, the name Claude Speed comes from GTA2. It was the character you played as in that game, and many assumed that the two are the same person. Its a good asumption, after all, they do both have the same first name. I know there's more information about this topic that someone can post, but maybe if you search here on the forums you'll find what you seek.

I think the name Claude came from a interview OPM had with Dan Houser.

Heh...
Claude Speed's name I don't know where they got it from but it's
his name in GTA2...
HE IS INFACT THE SAME GUY!
FACTS:
They wear the same clothes.
They look the same.
They don't talk at most a groan.(But only when falling/shot/knocked over)
They have the same name.
The 3D models are based off of Scott Maslen the actor for Claude Speed in GTA2...

I guess he is named Claude Speed because he is fast as hell when
he runs and he could run forever...(One GTA2 or if you complete the
Paramedic Missions on GTA3)

I've heard some people say that GTA3 was a remake of 2 with more realistic gangs (I mean come on The Hare Krishnas? The Mad Scientists?) and a better storyline, did it take place in Liberty City?

Also, how can you tell that the characters dress the same, wasn't GTA2 top down?

I didn't know he was being called Claude- personally I've been going with "Charles" biggrin.gif - but it's very likely considering the clothes the lead character was wearing in the intro movie of GTA2.

Edit: I just watched the GTA2 intro movie, and the city is New York City- hence, Liberty City. It's obvious because the intro movie shows the WTC towers.

@Phil:
Umm...The Intro...The introduction is about the character you
play...Claude Speed...And he wheres the same clothes as Claude
in GTA3 and SA...

And yes GTA2 is in Liberty City/New York City...
You can tell it's New York by the skyline and the Police Car has
NYPD and blue stripes on the side...Thus being a New York City
Police Car...Thus making it Liberty City...
Liberty City=New York City

Even though his name is almost definitely Claude, I still kinda like to think that you make your own guy in GTA3. You can make him who you want him to be. I thought that was cool

That's what I found most appealing about the GTA3 character. You didn't know anything about him, and he didn't speak. Thus, you could formulate your own story about him. It gave you room for player cusomtization, in terms of character.

But the GTA2 character, and Catalina's boyfriend from San An all point to this guy being Claude Speed. Personally, I like that they've finally tied him into another GTA game. Besides, most of us have played GTA3 so much that it's good to see there is now some finality to whom he really is.

More on-topic now, perhaps his name is a spoof of the good-luck phrase 'God Speed'?

new york isnt liberty city literally, liberty city is just a loosely based new york/chicago themed city, and second gta2 takes place in the future, there are no wtc towers in new york

@hey:
Dude Liberty City has nothing to do with Chicago!!!
It is NEW YORK it is vaguely based on it but it is NEW YORK CITY...
They were even gonna have the police cars with Blue Stripes on
the side like in NEW YORK CITY...
And are you f*ckin' stupid!?! How the f*ck could you say there are
no World Trade Center Towers in New York City??? The f*ckin'
game was made when they were still up so in GTA's future they
are still there...
