I was working on a project that a tutorial was explaining, and every time I erased, there was this faint grey and white checkerboard behind the crap I was erasing, but every time I open up an image and erase, I don't get that checkerboard, what am I doing wrong? Sorry if this is blatantly obvious to professional users, I'm just a novice.

Its erasing it fine, the background in the tutorial is set to transparent, allowing themto save images for web transparency etc. yours is most probably set as a white background, to change this you need to choose 'Transparent' from the Contents option when starting a new image.

Make sure your eraser opacity and flow isn't set to anything but 100%...
