we were having this discussion at my college t'other day and the only artist they could come up with that made protest music and songs was Eminem!

I think this is bullsh*t and wondered if anyone knew of any other bands/artists that made protest songs or are a protest band.

I can think of a few and eminem does not even come close.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, only bands that are around today count. Im know there used to be alot.

I think anti-flag or propagandhi are the most political protest bands around at the moment.

Certain Pink Floyd songs have political themes, not really protest style but the themes are there. Mostly apparant in The Final Cut and pieces of The Wall. :: <')))>(

Try some Immortal Technique, Mr.Lif or Sage Francis. Some of the later, and earlier Public Enemy albums are very politically/socially oriented.

Eminem is al lyou could come up with? Oh dear me. I don't really buy his 'protest music', given that he claims have principles but then openly endorses Nike, but that's just my humble.

You've always got things like, most obviously,

Rage Against The Machine.
Green Day.
Public Enemy.
Dead Kennedys.
John Lennon!
Ice Cube did a few.
U2.
All those Band Aid folks.
And a lot of Bloc Party's songs are very politically charged, if you can get past his London accent and the lyrical obliqueness.

Hey, yeah, and they freakin' rule. And are still fully-functional.

Autosuggestion scratches head and frowns

Actually, are they? Did they just slip off the radar or something? Or are we spared them in the UK?

GWAR rules. I forgot to mention Saddam A Go-Go.

But Asian People seems more like a poem or a speech with a little guitar in the background.

ToyMachine

I Fought The Law wouldn't count, it was originally done long long ago and the earliest incarnation I can think of is by the Bobby Fuller Four. Sorry, but the Dead Kennedys just covered it.

Others to note include CCR, Jefferson Airplane, Edwin Starr's War, etc.

but that's all Vietnam era and hippy counterculture stuff, so, that doesn't count.
