Just got a new laptop.. my old desktop computer was growing increasingly out of shape, and I haven't been able to play games on it for quite a while (I could play VC & GTA3 of course). My old computer was a 1.33Ghz Athlon with 256mb RAM and a 32MB Nvidia Geforce2 MX400 card. Good when I bought it, piece of sh*t now.

So instead of going for another desktop computer, I decided to try a laptop. People recommended all kinds of laptops, I did some research on my own, and I think I got one of the best ones out right now.

From the sticker on the case:
Acer TravelMate 8104WLMi
-Intel Pentium M 760 (2.0ghz, 533mhz FSB, 2MB L2 cache)
-15.4" WSXGA+ TFT LCD
-ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 with 128mb
-100GB HDD (5400rpm)
-DVD-Super Multi Double Layer (support DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+-RW)
-1GB DDR2 533
-802.11a/b/g wireless LAN
-Bluetooth

The thing weighs in at just under 3kg and is less than 3cm thick. Take a ruler and measure that. Very slim and light for a laptop of its calibre. I was looking for something I could stick in my bag and take to school as well as be able to play games on it.

So, for the games. Let's start with the best looking. Doom 3. Screenshots:

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Unfortunately I didn't find a widescreen mode for Doom 3, so these screenshots are in 1024x768.

For those of you who have played Doom 3, you should know that screenshots just don't show how amazing it is to go into a dark corridor lined with lights, pull out a flashlight and watch how the shadows unfold. The game is graphically more amazing than I could have imagined. As you can see from those screenshots, this laptop was able to do a great job with the graphics. Framerate was around 40-50fps.

Far Cry. Screenshots 1280x1024, no widescreen mode either. Graphics options maxed.

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Not as stunning visually as I expected after having read reviews. The water looks amazing, the rest was so-so. Judge for yourself. Wasn't as much of a challenge for the laptop as was Doom 3. Framerate was pretty high.

Next, Half-Life 2. I never played the original Half-Life, neither was I addicted hopelessly as many people are to Counter Strike. I did get my hands on HL2 though, and the graphics were amazing! HL2 had a widescreen mode to fit my laptop as well, so that was a huge plus. Video detail maxed out again:

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

The opening scene. Notice the shadows and reflections on the buidlings. Sweeet.

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

I stumbled across some kind of police officer. I was warned. I didn't listen. I was hit. Some woman watched on.

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

Stumbled across another kind of scene. Guard didn't appreciate me being there, and he gave chase. Check out the detail on the background scene and the guy chasing me. wow.gif

First scene: If you didn't know, HL2 allows you to pick up any object you want. This included some box I found in an alley. Notice how the light shines through the little holes and the shadow on the ground shows that. I decided to throw it at one of the guards standing a bit further down the path. He didn't appreciate it. Second scene: Got into a building, saw some people watching something down below, and picked up a TV set and threw it at them. Good fun tounge.gif

user posted imageuser posted imageuser posted imageuser posted imageuser posted image

A bit more messing around and I woke up with this woman looking at me. Followed her to the elevator. She took me to some doctor guy. Messed around a bit, the guy had to do something at the desk. Check out the level of detail of the things on the desk, and the magnifying glass which actually maginifies (a first in video games?). The orange moving water in the canisters in the background looked really amazing. It doesn't look as amazing in a screenshot, but when I first saw it I was stunned. Walked over, turned around and some guy had already walked in and was talking to the doctor.

So as you can tell, this notebook had absolutely no problems playing any of the top games I threw at it. If you're in the market for a laptop and have $2100 to spend, I would highly recommend this model. I am VERY VERY pleased with its performance.

If you're interested for more, check out the photos and benchmarks at:
http://www.hardwarez...?cid=14&id=1395
http://www.hexus.net...mlld19JRD0xMDAz

And if anyone wants GTA3 / Vice City screenshots to see approximately how San Andreas would look on this baby, just let me know. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. Reason I didn't include them was because playing GTA3 and Vice City (and even Halo) were hardly a challenge for the laptop.

You want me to show off? tounge.gif Nice laptop, but that keyboard looks very out of place, and that screen is nothing special. My laptop owns it since I score about 10-11k in 3dmark05. I play HL2 @ 1680x1050, with 4xfsaa tounge.gif also I play Far Cry @ 1280x1024 with 4xfsaa, and I love it. I don't get the best battery life, lol. Throwing TV sets at people is good fun in HL2, you'll enjoy HL2, great game. I finished it about a week ago smile.gif

@Atomic go on whip 'em out tounge.gif

Atomic: Pics please

Cran- What kind of laptop? How much was it? Screens?

DigitalD- Your Doom3 Screens are about on par with my 800x600, medium detail, 9600xt ones. Your Far Cry ones look worse then my 1024x768, high detail, no aa/afm 9600xt's. Your HL2's are far better then my 1024x768, medium detail, 9600xt ones.

I always used to think Laptops sucked until I got this one, I just wanted a decent one for when im away and I always thought Laptop would never be as fast as a desk top, well this machine has converted me.
Plays half life 2 like a dream, but not sure if as good as Digitals. Its a very fast machine, I havent used my home PC for months now, this is far better. And My home machine is very decent.

Cran, that thing must weigh a tonne. And you have a desktop CPU in a laptop? That's suicide for your testicles bro.

http://www.p4laptops...0-spec-full.htm

The mobility X800 is a very nice touch, I was looking for one but couldn't find one except in the ABS G3 Mayhem that guy pointed out, but that thing weighs 3* as much as my laptop weighs and is twice as thick. I don't need a brick, I need a laptop.

Yours is also 17".. too big for my taste. And it cost 3000$... wasn't willing to pay that much. So it's better, but it's too big for my tastes, needless to say you got top of the range technology all over it though.

XPS Gen2 is lighter and gets better battery life with teh 6800 Go Ultra, but the screen sucks, and I can't get one here in Australia. Besides the screen isn't true 17", it's a 17" widescreen, so it's smaller than a 17' LCD screen.

Not me, but I only get a 1-2 hours from this battery, it's a DTR (Desktop Replacement) the only reason I have it so it's easier to move, and my dad could only saralry sacrifice a laptop (So what if he saralry sacrificed a desktop last year tounge.gif . You know i'll get about a gagillion fps in half life tounge.gif Besides, it's a better package than a desktop, so what if it cost more. It comes with four speakers and a sub, 17" WSXGA+ glossy widescreen (Which i'm going to get on a desktop smile.gif ). Come on, I can even upgrade the CPU, and the graphics card! So this beast will rock on for a while.

I really wish notebook graphics could be upgraded.

My tablet/notebook specs are

Pentium M 1.5GHz 400FSB
512MB RAM
60GB 5400RPM hdd
Geforce 5200 Go

The 5200 isn't too bad, but it sucks that I'm stuck with it.

At least I have a PM instead of a P4 though. Pentium Ms destroy Pentium 4s in terms of performance vs. power requirements.

No sh*t. But I'm more interested in having a cpu that can still perform damn well AND give me at least 3-4 solid hours of battery use. I'm not aiming for any 3dmark records by any means.

The 5200 dektop parts are sh*t, but the mobile part isn't too bad, but not exactly good either.

Well Cran's is by no means a real notebook.. its a mini desktop if anything. With those specs you would be hard pressed to get any battery life or portability out of it.
