The free version is basically the same as the retail version but the radio is stored on the hd and it doesn't have cd checks. I don't think they really optimised or fixed much at all. It still says v9.6 but it includes the nade exploit fix from v10.3. The official patch also won't work on this free version since it would ask for the cd. They didn't replace the DMA logo on the main menu like they did with GTA1. There's only two language choices in GTA2 Manager instead of the regular five choices.

The exe files are different and these files compare different:

mp1-2p.mmp
mp1-3p.mmp
mp1-4p.mmp
mp1-5p.mmp
mp1-6p.mmp
mp2-2p.mmp
mp2-3p.mmp
mp2-4p.mmp
mp2-5p.mmp
mp2-6p.mmp
mp5-2p.mmp
mp5-3p.mmp
mp5-4p.mmp
mp5-5p.mmp
mp5-6p.mmp
res-2p.mmp
res-2p.SCR
res-3p.mmp
res-3p.SCR
res-4p.mmp
res-4p.SCR
res-5p.mmp
res-5p.SCR
res-6p.mmp
res-6p.SCR

For the mmp files, a space was removed from the descriptions, eg. "Residential 2 Player" is now "Residential 2Player". That doesn't effect multiplayer but different .SCR files means you can't play Residential level without sending the files to your opponent.

All the other data files are the same as the unpatched v9.6 GTA2 retail. It connects to retail v9.6 ok and it was synced for the 30 seconds that I tested but there is at least one problem, the nade/molotov exploit is fixed in this free version, so if a player does that in the retail version, the game will go out of sync.

DMA logo hasn't been on a GTA game since GTA2. GTA3 and above have rockstar logos.

Thanks for the torrents!

The rockstar page says the ZIP contains a ".pdf of the original PC game manual" but it doesn't so I guess it was a download availible parellel to the ZIP file. Does anyone have a copy of the manual?

Thanks!

I said they were slow (and one of them is down now). I was getting 60kb/sec from the second torrent. Try that instead.

EDIT: A FAST HTTP MIRROR: http://ramon.twisty....a2installer.zip

I already have it but I was clocking 100kb/sec+ from there smile.gif

Thanks! I have it going at 440 KB/S. The Rockstar Classics download is still not working though.

Wewt, I got it!
So... it tells me to run 'Autodetect' as soon as I install. I can't find it, and when I try and play regardless, the sound screws up and goes to a fuzz.

There is no autodetect, I don't know what they were smoking. You should run gta2 manager first. They also forgot to include the pdf manual.

Mmm. It's fine as long as I don't minimize it or try to change the settings (without restarting). The starting video rocks, I've never seen that before!

Good job, S3ktor. Have you (or anyone else) tried running MultiSlayer v4.1 in it yet?

Multislayer and all the other mods work fine on the free version. The rockstar classics download site actually worked today, although it didn't like getright. GTA2 downloaded extremely fast.

Ok here is how you do it,GTA 2 install can only be downloaded between 7:00-10:00pm (sometimes at 5:30pm as well) no other time works and the download will fail... It will give you an error saying that the server is over-loaded. This also goes for GTA 1 and the wmc game.I hope this helps anyone with the same problem. Untill Rockstar fixes this problem this is the only way that works.
